Why this is such a hard problem
Language doesn't fossilize — there's no direct physical evidence of ancient speech itself. Everything scientists know comes from indirect clues: anatomy, genetics, and behavioral evidence inferred from the broader archaeological record.

Anatomical clues
A descended larynx (positioned lower in the throat than in other primates) allows for the wide range of vowel sounds needed for speech, but it also increases the risk of choking — an evolutionary trade-off suggesting strong selective pressure favored speech capability despite this cost. The shape of the hyoid bone (a small bone in the throat involved in speech and swallowing) is also studied for clues. Broca's area, a brain region associated with language production, can sometimes be inferred from the shape of fossil skull endocasts (impressions of brain shape preserved in the braincase).

The FOXP2 gene
Mutations in the FOXP2 gene are known to cause a specific speech and language disorder in modern humans, making it a key gene of interest for language evolution. Notably, Neanderthals share this same gene variant with modern humans, suggesting the genetic groundwork for language capability may have existed before the two species' lineages fully diverged, or evolved in parallel.

Behavioral modernity as indirect evidence
The emergence of symbolic behavior, art, and complex tools roughly 70,000–40,000 years ago (covered in physical anthropology as behavioral modernity) is often used as indirect evidence that complex language likely existed by this point, since this kind of symbolic culture seems to require sophisticated communication to develop and transmit.

The gestural hypothesis
One major hypothesis proposes that language began with hand gestures before vocal speech developed — the idea being that gestural communication may have provided an evolutionary stepping stone toward full spoken language.

The earliest agreed language-capable anatomy
The oldest point at which scientists broadly agree the necessary anatomy for full spoken language was present is roughly 300,000 years ago, coinciding with the emergence of Homo sapiens — though this doesn't necessarily mean fully modern language was actually in use immediately at that point.

Exams test whether you can explain why language origins are so hard to study scientifically, name at least two types of indirect evidence used to study this question, and what the FOXP2/Neanderthal connection suggests.
