Primatology and Social Behavior — The diversity of primate social systems — and what they tell us about human evolution

Why primatologists study social structure
Because humans are primates, understanding the range of primate social systems helps anthropologists think about what social behaviors might be evolutionarily ancient versus culturally specific to humans.

Jane Goodall and chimpanzees (Gombe)
Goodall's long-term fieldwork at Gombe Stream (Tanzania) documented tool use, coordinated hunting, and even warfare and complex social politics among chimpanzees — overturning the assumption that these behaviors were uniquely human.

Dian Fossey and mountain gorillas
Fossey's research described gorilla social structure as typically organized around one-male groups: a dominant silverback male leading a stable family unit of females and offspring.
