What taphonomy studies
Taphonomy examines all the physical and chemical processes that modify bones and artifacts between the time of death/deposition and the time an archaeologist finds them — this includes weathering, carnivore gnawing, water transport, bioturbation (disturbance from burrowing animals), root etching, trampling, and chemical dissolution.

Why this matters for interpretation
Without understanding taphonomic processes, it's easy to misread the evidence — for example, mistaking naturally occurring damage for evidence of human activity, or vice versa. A classic application: distinguishing human butchery marks (intentional, patterned cut marks from stone tools) from carnivore tooth marks (irregular gouges and punctures from animal teeth) on the same bone.

Researchers directly observe how bones decay and get modified in modern environments (watching real carcasses decompose and get scavenged, for example) in order to build models that help interpret ancient, already-fossilized bone assemblages.
